A Decanter Inspired by a Snake (2011/12/06)
   Maximilian J. Riedel, the chief executive officer of Riedel Crystal of America, was born in 1977, the Year of the Snake, which may explain his fondness for serpents. Four years ago, he designed Eve, a long necked decanter that resembled a snake. Later, he said, he realized the shape offered unexpected benefits: it made it easy for users to swirl the wine to aerate it and t decanted wine much faster than the companys other models.
   His latest decanter, the Mamba, was inspired by an African snake considered the fastest in the world. “We had this design independently tested,” he said, “and it aerates wine faster than any other decanter on the shelf.”
   An awkward moment inspired Blueprint, new table linens by Marianne van Ooij. “I was at a meal with friends and mentioned that I wanted to be a product designer, and all I got were blank stares,” said Ms. van Ooij, who has a degree in psychology. “I pointed to everything on the table, cups, plates, even salt shakers, and politely reminded my friends that each of these objects was designed by a person.”
   With that in mind, Ms. van Ooij created a pattern that mimics technical drawings, reminding users how tableware is made. The tablecloth has a grid with silhouettes of glasses and silverware on it, along with measurements, production directions and an information box labeled “Title: Blueprint Dinner Textiles.”
   The latest addition to the Illy artist cup collection offers a glimpse of infinity to go with your espresso.
   Designed by the artist Anish Kapoor, the cup and its matching saucer have a reflective platinum finish. But the saucer also has a hole in the center, and “if you put the saucer over the cup and look in, you can’t understand the limits of the space,” said Carlo Bach, the company’s art director. It “looks like a sculpture of Anish Kapoor,” he said. The collection is 19 years old; previous participants include Julian Schnabel, Marina Abramovic and Pedro Almodóvar. Mr. Kapoor’s creation comes as a set of two espresso cups and saucers , in a numbered, limited edition of 20,000. It will be shipped in September, but orders are being accepted now.
