   OCCUPYING 120,000 square meters, Bao"an Stadium is in the Bao"an CBD with floor space of 100,000 square meters.The 869-million-yuan project includes a stadium, a swimming pool and a track-and-field arena with an underground car park.The 40,000-seat stadium will be used for the football matches for the Summer Universiade.Bao"an Stadium, nicknamed Bamboo Forest, was designed by German GMP International Architectural Design Co. in partnership with the Design Institute of South China University of Technology.The lush bamboo forests of southern China provided inspiration for the design.
   Walking up the stairs and entering the stadium through a platform which is about five meters above the ground, there is lifelike "bamboo" which was designed to support the bleachers and the roof."Bamboo is viewed as a symbol of traditional Chinese values. It is an example of achieving harmony between nature and humans besides implying the qualities of being upright and honest.The bamboo structure surrounding the stadium serves two functions. It is attractive and provides good ventilation by separating the upper part of the bleachers from the lower part," said a Bao"an District Public Works Bureau engineer, who is responsible for the construction of the project.
   Particular attention was paid to the efficient use of material during the design of the roof structure. The spoke-structured roof has the shape of an ellipse saddle, so that cables supporting the roof do not bear too much weight. The roof is made of light film to allow in natural light.According to the bureau, Bao"an Stadium is the first sports stadium in China to adopt the cable-film method.
   The main filed has nine lanes and is equipped with sound facilities, making it ideal for football as well as track-and-field events.A landmark in Bao"an District, the stadium will continue to be used after the Universiade.The basketball, badminton and tennis courts and the swimming pool will open to the public after the Games.
