   Most people in China still think of bamboo as a utilitarian material. “In Hong Kong, you usually see bamboo as a form of scaffolding,” says Mr. Dernoncourt, a long-time resident. Bamboo poles lashed together with strips of black plastic often encase high-rise construction sites and even serve as modified industrial ladders in indoor renovations.At the John Hardy office, more than 1,200 square meters, or 13,000 square feet, in a factory tower block since 2007, bamboo was chosen as a building material to evoke Bali, where the company has more than 500 employees.Of its 1,000 employees around the world, 50, mostly in finance, work in Hong Kong. But in addition to using the grass as a construction material, the jewelry brand also sees bamboo as a way to offset its carbon footprint.
   Bamboo also has been used prominently throughout The Upper House, the 117-room luxury boutique hotel that opened in Hong Kong’s Admiralty neighborhood in early October.“It is an Asian-influenced hotel, yet there is nothing Oriental about the space,” says the property’s designer, Andre Fu, a much sought-after Hong Kong architect. “The Asian influence permeates though balance. The choice of bamboo is because it is a subtle Asian material and it is green.”
   The designer said he liked bamboo’s natural feeling and the warm tan tone of the wood so he used it, along with the color celadon, as a main feature in room decor, the arrival area and the 48th-floor guest lounge.
   Mr. Fu says there is now a huge selection of widely available modern bamboo materials: from veneers to parquet flooring, even fabrics for soft furnishings.
   "At The Upper House, it is more obvious because we used bamboo extensively and it ties in with the story line of the space," he said. “Some see it as a fundamentally Asian material. I think it does infuse a degree of Asian sensitivity, but it depends on everything else that comes with it.”
