  Lately, dishware designers have rediscovered melamines capacity for displaying vibrant colors and sharply detailed images. Mr. Anderson decided to join the melamine renaissance by transferring several of his graphic designs onto plates.That book included the drawings of animals and the cuts of meat they become. Mr. Anderson sent those images to a company that manufactures melamine plates for the United States military. He refused to identify the company, calling it a trade secret.
   Many of Mr. Anderson’s images, published in a series of graphic-design books, teeter between the treacly and the tongue-in-cheek: smiling kangaroos, Op Art flowers, tasteful silhouettes of naked beauties. But there are darker images in the portfolio, as well: one recent book features plenty of scatological and sexual innuendo.
   The color on the early prototypes, he said, was mostly washed out.“We ended up doing 30 or 40 colors,” he said, “to see which ones they could pull off.” Mr. Anderson and the manufacturer eventually settled on a gentle palate of greens, pinks, peaches and sky blues, reminiscent of a Miami store sign that has spent too many summers in the sun.The Food for Thought plates went on sale in January 2006, under the Pop Ink brand, which was created by Mr. Anderson and the French Paper Company of Niles, Mich. The plates, priced at $10 each, are available through French Paper’s Web site, MrFrench.com, as well as at Sprout Home, a Chicago retail store.
   Mr. Anderson estimated that he has sold “a few thousand” of the Food for Thought plates. Given the somewhat grisly nature of the plates’ imagery — especially the dog schematic — he’s a bit surprised by their popularity.“It’s turned out to be one of our best sellers,” he said.He credits interest from vegetarian consumers, of course, but added that he had also received positive feedback from steadfast carnivores. Some steak lovers apparently enjoy being reminded that their dinner is natural.
