   A clever white ceramic serving plate set up like a game board is a cocktail conversation starter if there ever was one. The dish comes with instructions for playing solitaire on it. Fill it with assorted olives, take a turn, and if you jump, say, a Cerignola you then have to eat it. Nuts or other tidbits can also be served in it.
   Thoughtful eating is foremost on the mind of Grant Achatz, the chef at Alinea, the haute play with your food restaurant in Chicago. n collaboration with Martin Kastner, an industrial designer at Crucial Detail, Mr. Achatz has created the Squid, the Eye, the Bow and other serving pieces, which are sold through crucialdetail.com, with prices up to $35.
   “The point is an emotional experience,” Mr. Achatz said. “It’s like walking through a modern art museum and you’re moved by a piece.”Such an experience can be provoked by plucking a strip of bacon from a bow-like sling or taking a micro-bite of a deconstructed PB&J from a fan-like array of wires stemming from a metal base the Squid.
   Mr. Achatz envisions home cooks using the pieces to up their game to create edible sculpture for friends.“I joke to Martin how I’m going to send my dad a dozen Squids,” said Mr. Achatz, who said his father runs a “downscale, meat-and-potatoes type place” in Michigan. “And he can put his fried cod in them and, you know, serve a little basket of fries with them next to it. And wouldn’t people get a kick out of that?”
