   A Rare indeed are the city slickers who are not tempted by the first balmy spring day to make their corner of town green in a hurry. The problem is not the warm spring days, but the cool nights. By all means, give your plants a taste of the great outdoors as soon as daytime temperatures hover near 70 degrees. But bring them in at night. And do not start their summer vacation outside until nighttime temperatures stabilize above 70 degrees.
   When you do bring the plants outdoors, shield them for the first few days from the bright sun and winds. Bamboo Invasion Q. A bamboo I planted a few years ago has appeared at the other end of my yard. Can you explain how it got there? -- Harry G. Rosenbaum, Harrisburg, Pa.
    A. The elegant bamboos, most of which come from Asia, are fascinating landscape plants. Their evergreen stems, called culms, are straight and hard but also flexible and yielding. The plant itself is unusually durable, and even when the culms are severely damaged the plant can recover. "After the destruction of Hiroshima by atomic weapons, it was the green bamboo stems that were the first sign of new life," wrote Christine Recht and Max F. Wetterwald in their new book, "Bamboos" (Timber Press, $32.95).
   One, the pachymorph rhizome, is short and thick and curves up. Since the new culms of this bamboo emerge fairly close together, the plant stays in a tight clump, expanding only a short distance each year. This pattern is typical of the tropical bamboos and includes the genus Bambusa.
