How to choose the best bamboo? ( 2010/12/08)
   All of the bamboo which have been treated (exposure to heat water), are then kiln dried. The bamboo are placed in a kiln dryer at a temperature of between about 50℃, and about75℃, for period of time sufficient to reduce the moisture content in the bamboo to less than 5%. If a higher temperature is used, the bamboo may dry too quickly and undesirably warp or crack.
   In accordance to the preferred aspects of the invention, the step of softening bamboo to remove sugar content comprising of immersing bamboo in pure water and exposing bamboo in boiling water bath at a temperature of greater than about 50℃ for at least 60 minutes. All these processes won't use any chemical substance. The present invention remove the sugar content from the slice bamboo veneer which is durable, in that it will not crack when exposed to humidity and temperature, will not discolor, is not prone to insect infestation, and may be worked with in the same manner as ordinary hardwood.
   The phyllostachys pubescens bamboo we adopt is growing in the remote mountain area situated in the Southern Sichuan Bamboo Sea. The bamboo utilize to make bamboo veneer are at least 2-3 years old. They are 4-6 meters tall and about 30-40 centimeter in diameter. The first step is sawing off the whole stalk into small segments and removing the internal membranes in and the external nodes.
   The type of glue which is used is critical, preferably the glue is hot melt glue which is non-toxic and"environmentally friendly", such as a vinegar based glue. They are laminated together under a pressure of between about 300psi and about 350 psi, and preferably at a pressure of about 325 psi. If too much pressure is used they will crack, while if too little pressure is used , the veneer may stick together.
   The veneer formed by the above described process may now be cut, sanded, finished, stained or worked with in any manner in which ordinary wood could be worked with.
