Plants Outlast Researchers (2011/09/06)
Under natural conditions, botanists said, the two bamboo species in the experiment would not flower until they were about 30 years of age and 30 to 60 feet tall. It is very impressive that they've gotten the shoots to flower before they have any vegetative body to speak of,said Richard Howard, vice president for botanical science at the New York Botanical Garden.
It is not yet clear why the brew of hormones and milk encouraged precocious blooming. In the past, coconut milk has been found to have powerful and diverse effects on other plants. ''It's like cookery,'' said Dr. Hanke. ''There's a great deal of empiricism and blind luck in this business.''
So well did the technique work that 60 percent of the approximately 200 coddled shoots propagated healthy-looking seeds about two weeks later, a success rate that botanists say is astonishing. The seeds have yet to be planted in soil and allowed to grow, but experts expect them to be viable.
With the method, the botanists can begin trying to cross the two bamboo species to see what new hybrid appears. Should the crossings succeed, the scientists expect to cultivate other bamboo species in the lab and try more combinations.
They can also begin inserting foreign genes, like genes for disease resistance, into bamboo cells, thereby ushering the versatile bamboo, among the most venerable of plants, into the horticultural future. China's Minister of Forestry, Yang Zhong, has disagreed with a ministry spokesman over whether foreign donations to save pandas from a bamboo famine had been deposited in a bank instead of being used promptly. A Peking newspaper, Guangming Daily, quoted Mr. Yang last week as having denied to a Japanese television crew that the money was not used immediately to alleviate a shortage of bamboo, the pandas' staple diet. The Minister referred to a Science Times article in The New York Times on July 3 quoting officials of the Wolong Nature Preserve in Sichuan on measures taken to save the pandas.
