Spoons for Thinkers (2012/01/05)
Everythings about S. Russell Groves is just so, from his style of dress to his choice of words, nothing is superfluous. A modernist who worked for Richard Meier and Peter Marino before starting his own architecture and design firm in 1995, Mr. Groves does not seem like the sort of person who would amass anything in quantity.

It began when he was a student at the Rhode Island School of Design and was given an assignment to rethink flatware. “I became interested in how you can apply modernist principles to flatware,” he said. After college, he began collecting flatware, looking for silver pieces with handles made of contrasting materials like wood, Bakelite or resin — patterns that are “luxurious, but also very intellectual,” he said, “with a simplicity of form but richness of materials.”
The collection Mr. Groves, 49, assembled is specific in terms of style but ranges in price, from an olive wood-handled set from Sur La Table ) to vintage Gio Ponti sterling silver. Most of it was found at flea markets and auctions, he said, where he prefers to shop, but recently he volunteered to investigate the offerings at several stores in Manhattan, starting with Moss in SoHo.
His intent was to check out two patterns by Carl Pott, but before he could do that, he stumbled upon Maarten van Severen’s Hybrid Cutlery, a three-piece set with each piece made of a different material. The approach, Mr. Groves noted, was similar to the one he used in his student project. “Each piece is made of a material specific to the function of that piece; it isn’t all titanium or stainless,” he said.
