What the Designers Brought to the Table(2012/02/14)
Designers are finding ways to be more mindful of the environment, even when setting dinner tables. Last week, 57 tables for 10 were set by a group of decorators at Dining by Design, a benefit exhibition and dinner for Diffa, the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS. Some decorators turned recycled piles of newspapers into seating and found decorative uses for pieces of fallen trees and branches; one made placemats of slices of logs hefty platforms for fine dinnerware. More vases than usual held wisps of grasses or green leaves rather than the usual oversize bouquets of cut flowers, and one designer used digital technology to fill his space with virtual flowers.
Richard Mishaan, a New York-based designer, projected a video of moving flowers, by Jennifer Steinkamp, an installation artist, on the walls of his dining area. ''I loved the idea of bringing springtime into one's home by simply projecting pictures on the wall,'' he said. ''We tried to evoke a cozy woodland feel,'' said John Dransfield of Dransfield & Ross, a tabletop manufacturer.
Designers for Karastan, the carpet manufacturer, used large vinyl storage bags filled with recycled materials, like old newspapers and packing peanuts, as seating. Waterford Wedgwood, the crystal and china company, set a simple white table with a forest of stemmed glasses and candleholders. A rustic A-frame inspired the designers at Kiln, a Brooklyn dinnerware company, and KleinReid, Brooklyn-based porcelain makers. The editors at Elle Decor magazine, a sponsor of the event, draped their space in a tent of printed cotton fabric by Iksel .
Candlelight can sometimes be too dim, and overhead light too glaring, so Miles Redd used a table lamp to create a warm glow in the setting he designed for Brunschwig & Fils. The William and Mary-style settee , upholstered in Sobrani cotton by Mulberry Home , sat at a round table, all from Lee Jofa. For showrooms, to the trade: leejofa.com . Each chair at the table designed by Carol Helms for Benjamin Moore was different, an idea that can add interest to a room if done properly, with a common design element. Here, the chairs all had wood frames, even though some backs and seats were caned and others were upholstered.
