Why we choose bamboo? ( 2010/11/30)
   Despite the problems with plastic, virtually all types can be recycled a few times before becoming too weak. However, confusing municipal recycling laws and limited access to recyclers who accept all types of plastic have kept recycling rates low; in 2006, a mere 6.9 percent of plastic garbage we generated was recycled.
   Many bamboos form a habit of flowering. All members of a particular species flower, produce seeds, and diesimultaneously. They do is at intervals depend on species as long as 60 to 120 years. How bamboo know when to flower still remains a large mystery, but scientists indicate there are some kind of “alarm clock” in each cell of bamboos genetically, other than climate factor, controls bamboos flowerings. Between flowerings, bamboos reproduce vegetatively via rhizomes. The rhizomes under the ground send up bamboo shoots which break though surface and grow into culms. In contrast, bamboos grown from seed may take five to 20 years to reach full size and maturity. That's the reason why the blooms of bamboos often lead to a famine in human population and live stocks.
   Bamboo stems are used to build houses and bridges to make the tables and chairs that furnish the houses, and the fences that surround the houses. Workers scale bamboo scaffolding to construct even the tallest buildings in Asia. These flimsy-looking structures are survived in typhoons that collapse steel frameworks. A bridge over the Min River at Dujiang Weir, Sichuan hangs from cables of twisted bamboo—and has done so for more than 1,000 years.
