Wildlife Fund Cites Shortage Of Food as Threat to Pandas(2011/08/23)
Bamboos differ from trees and shrubs in a number of ways. One is the culm width, which, unlike other plant stems, remains the same from the moment it emerges from the ground until its death as much as 10 years later. Bamboo plants continue to produce thicker, taller culms until the entire clump reaches maturity. Bamboos spread by underground stems called rhizomes, which grow out and away from the plant and enable new territory to be colonized. The plant's above-ground appearance depends on its rhizomes, which are divided into two growth types.
China's giant panda is among 10 plants and animals named Endangered Species of the Year in a report made public today by the World Wildlife Fund. Others included Australia's Giant Gippsland earthworm and the California condor, whose population has increased more than 30 percent.
Of the 1,000 giant pandas in the wild, the report said, a continuing shortage of bamboo, on whose shoots the pandas feed, was threatening a quarter with starvation. China is starting a plan to hold and feed the pandas until bamboo growth can again sustain them.
Three giant pandas were saved from starvation by a rescue operation in the mountains of Sichuan Province but a fourth died because of a severe shortage of bamboo, wildlife conservation officials said here today. The death brought to four the number of pandas that have died of starvation in the last four months in China because of the withering of their staple food, the arrow bamboo.
